Repeat after me:
I am cool.
I am calm.
I am collected…..Actually, I’m fricken awesome!
When it comes to nutrition the holidays can be tricky, but there’s no reason to fear. You are in control! Let me say that again: YOU are in control.
First of all, you don’t have to explain to anyone why you are or are not eating certain things. You don’t have to guilt or shame yourself if you partake a little in the gifts of your family and friends which are in the form of food. You don’t have to miss out on gatherings which are food centered thinking it would be easier to just not attend. You don’t have to judge anyone else for their choices. You don’t have to feel restricted or punished.
You are nourished.
You are not deprived.
You are in control.
For some, food choices and quantities around the holidays become hard because sharing time with loved ones is a lovely and relaxing time and food, including sweet treats, are plentiful and flowing. Others may feel extremely stressed and not look forward to gatherings or have great family relationships which causes a breakdown in nutrition choices or even in caring altogether... That's hard.
There are many different feelings around the holidays. A lot of emotions, both positive and negative; a lot of memories, both good and bad, and…sometimes a lot of changes. It can definitely be a time of heightened energy whether in the form of stress or even heightened positive emotion.
Emotional regulation is just as, or even more important than food regulation. And both are going to help regulate the other. Stay tuned for some simple “Holiday Hacks” coming up in the next post, followed by many simple and delicious recipes in the weeks to come. In the meantime, practice gratitude for this upcoming season. Especially gratitude that you are not a victim, but in control of your life, your trajectory, your decisions…and your nutrition.
